1984–1986: Awal karier
Didi Kempot memulai kariernya pada tahun 1984 sebagai musisi jalanan. Bermodalkan ukulele dan kendhang, penyanyi kondang Didi Kempot mulai mengamen di kota kelahirannya Surakarta, Jawa Tengah, selama tiga tahun.
1987–1989: Mengadu nasib di Jakarta
Pada tahun 1987 Didi Kempot memulai karirnya di Jakarta. Ia kerap berkumpul dan mengamen bersama teman-temannya di daerah Slipi, Palmerah, Cakung, maupun Senen. Mulai dari situ julukan Kempot yang merupakan kependekan dari Kelompok Pengamen Trotoar terbentuk, yang menjadi nama panggungnya hingga saat ini.
Sembari mengamen di Jakarta, Didi Kempot dan temannya mencoba rekaman. Kemudian, mereka menitipkan kaset rekaman ke beberapa studio musik di Jakarta. Setelah beberapa kali gagal, akhirnya mereka berhasil menarik perhatian label Musica Studio’s. Tepat di tahun 1989, Didi Kempot mulai meluncurkan album pertamanya. Salah satu lagu andalan di album tersebut adalah Cidro.
Lagu Cidro diangkat dari kisah asmara Didi yang pernah gagal. Jalinan asmara yang ia jalani bersama kekasih tidak disetujui oleh orang tua wanita tersebut. Itulah yang membuat lagu Cidro begitu menyentuh hingga membuat pendengar terbawa perasaan. Sejak saat itulah Didi Kempot mulai sering menulis lagi bertema patah hati.
1993–1999: Awal kesuksesan
Perjalanan karier Didi Kempot tak berhenti begitu saja. Pada 1993, penyanyi asal Solo tersebut mulai tampil di luar negeri, tepatnya di Suriname, Amerika Selatan. Lagu Cidro yang dibawakan sukses meningkatkan pamornya sebagai musisi terkenal di Suriname.
Setelah Suriname, Didi Kempot lanjut menginjakkan kakinya di benua Eropa. Pada 1996, ia mulai menggarap dan merekam lagu berjudul Layang Kangen di Rotterdam, Belanda. Kemudian, Didi Kempot pulang ke Indonesia pada 1998 untuk memulai kembali profesinya sebagai musisi. Tak lama setelah pulang kampung, pada era reformasi, 1999, dia mengeluarkan lagu Stasiun Balapan.
Kembalinya Didi Kempot ke Indonesia ternyata membuat kariernya semakin populer. Hal itu dibuktikan dengan keluarnya lagu-lagu baru di awal 2000-an.
Nama Didi Kempot kembali meroket setelah mengeluarkan lagu Kalung Emas pada 2013 lalu. Kemudian pada 2016, penyanyi asal Solo tersebut mengeluarkan lagu Suket Teki. Lagu tersebut juga mendapatkan apresiasi yang tinggi dari warga Indonesia.
Idola milenial
Perjalanan karier Didi Kempot yang berliku hingga mencapai kesuksesan seperti saat ini tidak membuatnya sombong. Sekarang ini ia menjadi idola generasi milenial yang akrab dengan media sosial.
Sebagai penyanyi senior, Didi Kempot memperlakukan penggemar layaknya sahabat. Dia bahkan tidak ragu mengajak penggemarnya bernyanyi bersama di atas panggung. Dia juga sering memberikan motivasi kepada penggemarnya agar tidak menyerah untuk berkarya.
Kini, penyanyi kondang asal Solo, Jawa Tengah, itu mendapat gelar “The Godfather of Broken Heart” alias Bapak Patah Hati Nasional. Julukan itu didaulat oleh kalangan muda kepada Didi Kempot karena kepiawaiannya membawa pendengar larut dalam emosi ketika mendengarkan lantunan lagunya.(*)
